Check the construction and care instructions of the specific roll or sheet instead of assuming that every cut-away behaves identically.

Use cut-away when the project includes:

  • Jersey, interlock, or another knit

Madeira describes its basic tear-away products as nonwoven stabilizers for stable woven materials such as denim and canvas. The company offers light, medium, and heavy versions and advises choosing weight according to the fabric plus the design’s size and density.

Wash-away stabilizer is removed with water. It is useful when no permanent backing can remain, but “wash-away” covers more than one structure.

Backing and topping do different jobs#

Backing goes under the fabric. Its main task is to stabilize the ground fabric against needle penetration, stitch pull, movement, and distortion.

Topping goes above the fabric. It creates a temporary surface that helps stop stitches from sinking into pile, loops, or nap. Water-soluble topping is commonly used on terry towels, fleece, corduroy, velvet, and some soft knits.
