The size printed in a listing is only one checkpoint. Brother, Janome, Baby Lock, and third-party manufacturers publish model-specific compatibility information because hoops with similar dimensions are not automatically interchangeable.

Copy the model from the machine’s rating label, manual, purchase record, or manufacturer account. Do not rely only on a family name printed prominently on the front.
Suffixes matter. A manufacturer can sell several generations under a shared family name, and accessory support can change between them. Record a code such as PE900, NQ1700E, MC550E, or BLMFO2, not only “Brother embroidery machine,” “Memory Craft,” or “Baby Lock Flourish.”
When searching, use this format:

Open the manufacturer’s product, support, manual, or accessory-compatibility page. A marketplace result can help locate a product, but it should not replace the manufacturer’s supported-model list.

2. Confirm the embroidery unit and frame holder#

- A built-in carriage on an embroidery-only machine
- A frame holder on a single-needle free-arm machine

Photograph the original hoop’s bracket beside a ruler before discarding a broken hoop. Capture the mounting side, hole or pin spacing, bracket offset, labels, and every molded number.
3. Compare the hoop bracket and detection arrangement#
The hoop bracket is the arm, rail, or tabbed section that connects the frame to the embroidery unit. Check:
- Which side of the hoop carries the bracket
- Whether the bracket is centered or offset
- The distance between mounting points
- The shape of its tabs, slots, pins, and latch
- Whether the machine or holder detects the hoop size
Some embroidery machines detect the installed frame or use its bracket position to determine available movement. A bracket that looks close is not sufficient evidence that its geometry or frame coding is correct.
Brother provides a useful same-size example. The company’s standard SA439 and camera-enabled SA439S are both described as 5 × 7 hoops, but their published compatible-machine lists are different. The shared nominal field does not make the two accessory codes interchangeable across every listed machine family.
This is why bracket position and sensor compatibility must come from documentation for the exact hoop variant. A marketplace photograph cannot prove that internal tabs, offsets, or coded positions match.
4. Separate hoop dimensions from the usable stitch field#
Listings can refer to several different measurements:
- The hoop’s outside dimensions
- Its inside opening
- The nominal size in the product name
- The maximum usable stitch field
- The machine’s maximum embroidery space
- Package or shipping dimensions
These measurements are not interchangeable.

Third-party listings make the distinction especially important. HoopMaster describes its “9 × 5” Mighty Hoop as having an inside opening of about 8.875 × 5.25 inches, while the approximate actual sewing area is about 8.08 × 4.46 inches and depends on the machine brand. Therefore, compare the design size with the documented usable field—not the frame’s outside size or opening. Leave a small practical margin instead of placing stitches exactly on the stated boundary.
5. Match the exact part number#
A part number is usually more reliable than a title such as “large hoop” or “4 × 4 frame.” Record every number from:
- The outer hoop
- The inner ring
- The bracket
- The grid template
- The machine manual
- The manufacturer’s accessory page
- An official parts diagram
Do not assume every number on a hoop identifies the complete assembly. A grid, screw, spring, inner ring, or template can have its own replacement code.
Janome’s documentation illustrates this distinction. Its M2 126 × 110 mm hoop has complete-hoop part number 770808004, while the replacement template, screw, nut, and snap ring have separate numbers.
Janome also lists two versions of its 100 × 40 mm free-arm hoop on the FA10 accessory page:

- “4 × 4,” “5 × 7,” or another size in the title
- A similar frame color
- A bracket that appears to be on the correct side
- The statement “Brother-compatible” without model numbers
- A review from an owner of a different machine
- A marketplace vehicle-style compatibility tool with no manufacturer source
- The fact that a design file fits within the machine’s maximum field
- The fact that the hoop can be pushed onto the carriage
If an original part is discontinued, ask an authorized dealer whether the manufacturer issued a superseding part number. Do not infer that a later hoop is a replacement because it has the same dimensions.
OEM, magnetic, and third-party replacements#
An original-equipment hoop with an exact supported-model listing is usually the simplest compatibility decision. A third-party or magnetic hoop can still be suitable, but it needs equally specific documentation for the machine, frame holder, bracket, and usable field.
